I used to believe ghost stories were nothing more than harmless fiction. However, that changed forever after one weekend in Whispering Hollows. Since that day, sleep no longer feels like rest—it feels like a dangerous gamble.
Whispering Hollows never appeared on any official map. In fact, locals only mentioned it in hushed rumors passed among themselves. Specifically, they spoke of an ancient curse woven into the trees, claiming that those who listened carefully enough could hear voices calling from the depths.
Curiosity eventually overpowered our common sense. Consequently, my friends and I decided to explore the forest one weekend, convinced it would be a thrilling adventure. Looking back now, that decision remains the biggest mistake of my life.

Into the Silence
The moment we crossed the tree line, an oppressive unease settled over the group. At first, the feeling stayed subtle, almost possible to dismiss. But soon, the silence grew unbearable. No birds called. No insects hummed. Even the wind refused to stir the leaves.
Then, without warning, a voice sliced through the dead air.
“Turn back.”
We froze instantly. Kavya finally broke the tension in a trembling whisper, asking if anyone else had heard it. No one needed to answer. After all, we all knew the voice hadn’t come from any human throat.
Despite the clear warning, we pushed deeper into the woods. In hindsight, that single choice sealed our fate. Suddenly, the trees around us began to twist into grotesque shapes while shadows stretched in directions that defied logic. Meanwhile, the air turned bitterly cold.
Then the whisper returned, louder and laced with unmistakable rage.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Fear surged through us. We spun around and tried to run, but escape was no longer straightforward.

The Watcher
A sudden movement flickered between the trunks. What first looked like another shadow soon revealed its true form. To our horror, the figure towered unnaturally tall, its limbs elongated far beyond human limits. Worse still, its head tilted sideways at an impossible angle.
That face remains burned into my memory. A grotesque smile stretched impossibly wide across its features—far too large, far too wrong. Remarkably, it didn’t chase us. Instead, it simply watched, its eyes following every frantic step.
Panic took over. We crashed through the undergrowth, branches clawing at our skin and clothes. All the while, whispers closed in from every direction, overlapping in a chilling chorus.
“You came…”
“You heard…”
“Now you stay…”
Survival became the only thought left. We didn’t stop. Eventually, we burst onto the road, gasping for breath. But relief never arrived. Instantly, something felt terribly wrong.
It was only then that we realized Sameer was missing.

The Thing That Followed
We shouted his name until our voices cracked. Yet, the forest offered nothing in return except the same unnatural silence. That night, exhaustion should have brought sleep. Instead, my eyes flew open just after 2 AM.
Scratch… scratch… scratch…
The sound came from the window. My heart hammered as the whisper returned, calm and intimate.
“You brought me with you.”
When I forced myself to look, something was already standing outside the glass.
And it was smiling.
From that night onward, the whispers grew clearer. Worse, they knew things no one else could possibly know.
“You left him…”
“You ran…”
“He stayed…”
Sleep became impossible.
Days later, the scratching moved to the door. I locked it and barricaded it with every piece of furniture I could move. Still, the sound continued. Long, thin fingers eventually slid under the gap, feeling their way inside like blind worms searching for prey.
Whispering Hollows doesn’t merely haunt its victims. Instead, it marks them. As I soon learned, once it chooses you, distance offers no protection.
It always follows.

A Growing Presence
For a time, I tried to convince myself I was imagining it. But the signs became impossible to ignore. For instance, the cold spots that followed me from room to room. Similarly, the reflections in mirrors that moved a split-second too late. Above all, there was the constant, gnawing sensation of being watched, even in the most public of places.
Eventually, my friends stopped answering my calls. In their eyes, I had become a liability—a reminder of the horror we had awakened. Frankly, I couldn’t blame them. After all, I wouldn’t have wanted to be near me either.

The Final Visit
Last night the scratching suddenly stopped. For one fleeting moment, hope flickered inside me.
Then the door creaked open on its own.
Sameer stood in the doorway.
Or rather, something wearing his face did.
His head tilted at that same unnatural angle. A smile stretched far too wide across his features. Behind him, the tall figure waited silently in the darkness, patient and eternal.
These days, the whispers never stop. On the contrary, they only grow louder with every passing hour.
So, if you’re reading this, hear me clearly: never go looking for Whispering Hollows. Furthermore, if you ever hear a voice calling your name from the shadows…
Do not answer.
Because once you do, it won’t remain in the forest.
It will follow you home.
